A Design Report by N.V.
{29th of November 2005}
With some heavy hitting sponsors, an impressive line up of speakers and some slick branding, Represent Creative Conference [14th-15th of October, 2005] had all the makings of a quality event.
So it came to pass I found myself being herded into a queue at a Luna Park conference venue on a Saturday morning [15th of October], by one of many perky Represent staff brandishing the obligatory clipboard, microphone headset and black Represent garb.
From my seat at the front of the auditorium, I turned to see the venue virtually full—the calibre of artists scheduled to speak an obvious draw card. However, it was disappointing that the first announcement of the day was an alteration to the schedule. The much hyped New York graffiti artist Lee Quinones had pulled out of the event due to his dissatisfaction with the AV system on the previous day.
This sparked howls of protest from some sections of the crowd, with several hecklers deriding the high cost of the tickets, which they purchased specifically to see Mr. Quinones. Anxious to be rid of this sticky subject, the uncomfortable MC dismissed the complaints with an instruction to ‘whinge to me later!’
Thankfully, this slightly cringe-worthy mini verbal melee was swiftly followed by the introduction of American group Brand New School. During a short, informal Q&A session from their couch position on the stage, Jens and Dennis from Brand New School outlined the mélange of designers, illustrators, 3-D artists, filmmakers and photographers that comprise their studio. With a desirous list of risk-taking clients, Brand New School regularly turn out pioneering work fuelled by their inventive and passionate approach.
